Fact Sheet
While the State of Alabama has operated an unclaimed assets program since 1971, the program has only been a part of the Treasurer's Office since 1996.
The role of the program is to (1) act as a consumer protection agency for those individuals and businesses with lost assets (2) indemnify businesses and allow them the opportunity to avoid the liability and expense of maintaining these assets on their books (3) promote awareness of the program and (4) receive, evaluate & pay claims accurately and efficiently.
Since 1996, over 366,000 claims have been paid and over $214 million has been returned by the state to the rightful property owners or their heirs.
There are currently over 3.8 million records currently available to be claimed worth over $420 million.
The average amount paid per claim since 1996 is $585.40.
In Fiscal Year 2011 alone, over $26 million dollars was returned to rightful owners or their heirs.
