question iconWhere do I mail my claim?

question iconI received information from a company that said that they could help me get my property for a fee. Should I use them to help me file a claim?

Answer: No.  These companies can not do anything for you that you can not do on your own for free.  There is no charge for the services that the Treasurer's Office provides.  Our staff will be happy to assist you with your search and claim for free.

question iconDoes unclaimed property mean you have things like houses, cars, and boats?

Answer: No. The only assets held by the Treasurer's Office are funds in the form of cash, stocks, bonds, insurance proceeds, utility deposits, etc.  We also receive valuables from safe deposit boxes that may be claimed.

question iconI have lived in states other than Alabama. Could I have property in those states as well?

Answer: Absolutely.  Each state in the U.S. has a program for unclaimed property.  You should contact each state that you have lived in to perform a search.  Visit www.missingmoney.com for a link to other state unclaimed property sites.

question iconThere is property being held for a family member of mine that has died. Can I claim it?

Answer: If you have been named by a probate court as the executor or administrator over that person's estate, you are authorized to file a claim on behalf of the estate.  If the owner had no will or estate, the surviving spouse or children of the owner may be able to file a claim.  Please contact our office at (334) 242-9614 for additional information.

question iconCan I bring my claim and information to your office in person?

Answer: Yes.  Our normal business hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m.  We are located in Suite 636 of the RSA Union building located at 100 North Union Street in Montgomery.

question iconWhy was my money turned over to the state?

Answer: Businesses and financial institutions are required by law to report assets to the state after a period of inactivity and loss of contact with the property owner.

question iconHow long will the claim process take?

Answer: Our staff makes every effort to process each claim received as quickly as possible.  On average, the process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.

question iconWhy do I have to send in a copy of my identification and Social Security card to prove my claim?

Answer: Our staff is very aware of the concerns you may have about the safeguarding of your personal information.  However, in order for us to make sure that payment is made only to rightful owners, we must have this documentation to verify your identity.  Please know that all information received in our office is treated as highly confidential.
